052711-sam_main.jpgSam Milby celebrated his 27th birthday last May 23, and he shared what special gift he got from international singer Marie Digby. “She and her sisternandito sila. She gave me, sabi nila, ‘yung favoritenilang men’s cologne. I’m sorry I forgot the name,ha ha ha! First time that I heard of it.”

The heartthrob actor and the Irish-Japanese singer met and dated last year. At first, Sam was hopeful that the distance and their work wouldn’t hinder them from having a serious commitment. But towards the end of 2010, he revealed that he and Marie decided to be just friends since their busy schedules had prevented them from being together more often. “Friends lang talaga. I saw her on my birthday. Before that she’s been here for three months, but I’ve only seen her three or four times. I think she’s leaving in two or three weeks, I think she’s going back to the States. Last year we’ve decidedna friends na lang. So far we’ve been enjoying the friendship. We get to talk but not all the time.”

No reason to be sad though because according to Sam, he and Marie are happier now with being friends since there are no expectations for a commitment. “I could say na we’re better now as friends. Kasi nung dating kami, parang nagkaroon ng mga expectation. Ang hirap kasi we were living so far apart. Ngayon there’s no expectation at all. We’re just enjoying the friendship.”

While he has no girlfriend at the moment, Sam said he is devoting his time to work, particularly the Star Cinema movieForever and a Day with KC Concepcion and preparing for the teleserye Alta with KC, Gretchen Barretto, Angelica Panganiban, Zanjoe Marudo, and Luis Manzano.

But he still took he time to meet reporters to promote his independent film Third World Happy which is showing from May 25 to 31 in SM Cinema North EDSA, Megamall, Manila, Marikina, Southmall, Sta. Mesa, Fairview, Cebu, and Bacoor. This film, which was part of last year’s Cinema One Originals film fest, was Sam’s second independent movie starring after 2008’s Cul De Sac. He said that doing indie films, apart from being known for his blockbuster mainstream projects, helps him grow as an actor. “I think it’s important to do indie films because you get to do out-of-the-box roles and you get to improve in your craft. When I met Direk EJ (Salcedo), he told me na nung sinusulat niya ‘yung script, wala na siyang naiisip na ibang actor to play the role of Wes than me.”

Direk EJ wrote and directed Third World Happy based mostly on his experience spending many years in the US and coming back home to be reunited with family and friends. The director thought of no other actor than Sam to play the lead role Wes because according to him the slang Tagalog-English of the character must sound natural, and that Sam very much understands how it is to be a balikbayan since the actor grew up in the States.

Direk EJ noted the big advantage of having a famous star like Sam top-bill an indie film. “Having a big star like Sam of course attracts attention. The challenge for me is because most of Sam’s movies are love stories and happy endings, I want him to do something different. At first I thought his fans would get mad at me because in the movie Sam appeared with no makeup, he has a goatee, looking tired with eye bags. But what he was able to achieve was to look very sad. The movie is about loneliness. I’m happy that I was able to get those viewers who want to see a different Sam on screen.”

Na may inspirasiyon, may taong puwedeng kausapin pag may problema, you know what I mean. That’s what’s great about having a love life.

“But in terms of being lonely, I’m really ngayon, hardly ever at home kasi.

“I wanted to tell this story to remind people that if they are given the chance to pursue their dreams, they should never waste it. Most people never get the chance,” sagot ni Direk.

Sa isang review na inilathala sa South Korea, sinabi ni Kim Se-jin sa website ng Jeonju International Film Festival : “The film carefully unfolds Wesley’s painful past one by one while he keeps meeting his close friends living in a life different with the dreams which they had in their youth and his ex-lover which broke up with him when he left for the US. She is living her tough life with a 13-year old son and her mother now. Finally, he confronts the weight of the heavy time lying between the one who left and the one who was left during the funeral. The film consoles the audience and Wesley by showing sincere strength of the everyday life and the process of his reconciliation with his painful past.”

Ang Third World Happy ay palabas sa 10 piling SM Theaters sa buong bansa—SM North Edsa, SM Megemall, SM Manila, SM Fairview, SM Sta. Mesa, SM Southmall, SM Marikina, SM Cebu at SM Iloilo simula Mayo 25 hanggang 31.

Sam Milby is surprised about rumors that he is courting Julia Montes - Push.com.ph

052611-sam_main.jpgSam Milby was puzzled why his name is being linked to young actress Julia Montes. At the press conference of his independent film Third World Happy, Sam addressed rumors about him courting Julia. “I found it funny that everybody’s making chismisthat I was making ligaw kay Julia. I don’t even have her number.”

But he admitted that he is a fan of Julia and of Kathryn Bernardo, who achieved big success with theirteleserye Mara Clara. “Hinahangaan ko si Julia. ‘Yung Mara Clara first big rolenila ni Kathryn and they got high ratings. They’re very young, but they were able to achieve that kind of success.”

Sam explained that he and Julia got introduced to each other during ASAP in Iloilo. “We met one time sa ASAP, the first was when we did a show in Iloilo.Mabait siya. Dahil siya ‘yung kontrabida sa Mara Clara you would think agad na mataray na talaga siya. But I hope people won’t think if her that way kasi mabait talaga siyang tao.”

The actor asked the public not to give any other meaning to his admiration for Julia as a rising dramatic actress. “I have no idea why they are saying na nililigawan ko siya. I admire her. She’s a very beautiful girl and I know she has a bright future in showbiz. Siguro ang nasabi ko lang was, ‘Ang ganda nito! Ang galing!’ So based on those comments siguro inisip na baka liligawan ko siya.”

Sam celebrated his 27th birthday last May 23, while Julia had just graduated from high school last March. Being single at the moment, Sam was asked if he is open to dating a younger woman. “A lot of people say this and I believe it naman naage is just a number. A relationship is about maturity. For me right now, compared nung 17lang ako, malakingdifference. From 16 years old until you’re about 20, you undergo a lot of maturing. Some people mature a lot faster, I guess women mature faster than guys. I think it all depends on the connection,‘yung spark. But I think kung masyado nang isip-bata it can get very difficult.”

But Sam was also quick on drawing the line on the age of legality. “Maybe there’s a point na ‘young’ is ‘too young.’ Ha ha ha! In the States kapag below 18 years old, below legal na. Kulong ka na niyan! We call that age ‘jail bait.’ Siguro bastaat least 18 years old naman, ha ha ha!

Sam took a break from shooting the movie Forever and A Day co-starring KC Concepcion so he can promote his indie movie Third World Happy. Initially screened during last year’s Cinema One Originals competition, Third World Happy will be shown beginning May 25 until May 31 in SM Cinema North EDSA, Megamall, Manila, Marikina, Southmall, Sta. Mesa, Fairview, Cebu, and Iloilo. Sam talked about his experience crossing over from mainstream movies to indies. “Doing indie films is a lot of different. It’s about exploring new things about your acting, new directors, their style. This movie is very close to the life of Direk EJ (Salcedo). But he allows me to give my own input about my role. That helps you in growing as an actor.”

Sam’s performance earned rave reviews from fans and critics alike and the movie garnered him a Best Actor nomination from the recently-concluded Gawad Urian. Was he disappointed about losing the award? “I really thought I shouldn’t really win, ha ha ha!,” Sam honestly said. “I never expected anything. Siyempre ‘yung mgafellow nominees ko, si Sid (Lucero) ‘yung nanalo, si Coco (Martin), Pen Medina. These are actors na they always get nominated and win. This is my first acting nomination. Last 2006, I won as Best New Movie Actor. Getting a nomination from Urian makes me feel more than a winner.”

But this won’t stop Sam from trying out more offbeat roles in the future. He said that in his desire to become a better actor, he is now more picky when it comes to the projects that he will do. “Kumpara dati I guess I can say I’m now more picky when it comes to roles that I do. Siyempre nung bago pa lang ako whatever they gave me,sige lang ako. Ngayon I want to have a direction, a branding. I get to say kung ano na ‘yung gusto ko. But I still leave it up to ABS-CBN, my manager, to give me roles na they believe I can excel in.”

MANILA, Philippines - Sam Milby, one of the country's bankable stars, is open to the idea of taking on a gay role in a movie.
“It really depends on the script. I think, kapag acting piece (why not),” Milby told reporters during a press conference for the rerun of his independent film "Third World Happy."
Milby said if he will do a gay role, he will make sure it won’t be like the late Heath Ledger's film "Brokeback Mountain."
“I never watched the movie and it was very [much] talked about. I heard medyo torrid ang kissing scenes nila. I don’t know if I can go to that extent. But I guess it depends on the script and the role, if it's an acting piece,” Milby said.
Asked who he wants to be his leading man, Milby told abs-cbnNEWS.com: “I think if I'm going to do a role like that, it will be more fun if you're with people you're comfortable with, like Praty, si John Prats.”

Aside from shooting a film with actress-host KC Concepcion, Milby is busy promoting his second indie film, "Third World Happy."
The film revolves around the simple life of a "balikbayan" named Wesley (Milby) who left the Philippines and his girlfriend Aylyn (Jodi Sta. Maria) in order to pursue his dream of becoming a painter.
"Third World Happy", directed and written by EJ Salcedo, is currently showing at selected SM cinemas nationwide until May 31.
Milby's performance in the film garnered him a Best Actor nomination in the 34th Gawad Urian this year.
Sta. Maria, meanwhile, bagged the Best Supporting Actress trophy for the same film in the Cinema One Originals 2010 awards.

Sam Milby is the angsty Wes in EJ Salcedo's 'Third World Happy'
MANILA, Philippines — EJ Salcedo’s Cinema One Originals 2010 film “Third World Happy” has more to offer than the presence of mainstream movie and TV heartthrob Sam Milby.
While “Third World Happy” drives home the point that not all Filipinos that try their luck abroad end up being successful, it also shows how these Pinoys, as the common Filipino notion goes, just go on and put on a “happy” facade to cope with their disappointments.
Here, Milby veers away from his usual “pa-pogi” rom-com roles and plays Wesley, or Wes, a struggling Filipino expat painter based in New York City. Wes flew to the States armed with a Fulbright scholarship that would allow him to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a painter.
Though the prospect seems very promising, Wes left Manila with a heavy heart because his parents died in car crash just days before he was scheduled to leave. Aside from that, he was leaving behind his family and barkada, and also had to break up with his longtime sweetheart Aylyn (Jodi Sta. Maria) apparently without giving her a proper explanation on why he’s doing it.
On his 13th year abroad, Wes had to return home because a loved one died. His homecoming, of course, brings about reunions with friends and his ex, and also forces him to confront his fears and frustrations.
During the film’s pivotal conversation between Wes and Aylyn, the former described his current situation as “kinda in between things.”
Milby, to give him credit, was able to fully deliver the introverted, angst-ridden character this throughout the film. Perhaps also to underscore the typical “brooding artist” persona, Wes doesn’t speak much around people---opting to just give short replies in conversations, preferring to be on his own and smoke cigarettes.
It's also remarkable that Wes’ 13 years’ worth of emotional baggage is easily translated onscreen, with certain factors contributing to how viewers could easily empathize with him, like Wes’ personal conversations with his Kuya Danny (Richard Quan), the lack of background music and ambient sound (that did nothing but highlight the dubbing, which obviously shouldn’t be the case) among others. But perhaps it's Milby's own delivery that has earned him a Gawad Urian Best Actor nomination this year.
Though the dialogue may seem awkward at times – just as camera angles, scene transitions, camera focus, more than necessary number of fillers and static shots do –nothing bad can be really said about the cast, whose characters also have lost dreams of their own. It’s a nice mix that it almost seems realistic, especially with Wes’ barkada and the Milby-Sta. Maria pairing.
Despite the weight of (and the angst surrounding) the subject, though, “Third World Happy” is a heartwarming movie on the whole. The ending might be typical of Pinoy films, where everything gets resolved, but it did stay true to what actually happens in real life--wherein people actually move on with their lives without the need for any truly happy or reconciliatory ending.
